Vincenzo Amata founded Papamango almost 10 years ago. After a 30 year career in the fashion industry that took him all over Europe, he decided to go back to his hometown, Sant’Agata di Militello, a small seaside town in the western part of Sicily. One day, Vincenzo passed in front of a house where an old man was peeling a mango. He offered him a piece and it was suddenly love at first bite. Vincenzo understood right away that he needed to grow that exotic fruit and invested a quite important sum of money to do so. Everything he knows about mangoes he learned it on the internet. “I’m a self-taught” he says with pride while caressing the plant leaves.
I spent 5 days in his farm, trimming trees and talking about the meaning of life. It was still early for mangoes, but the scent of the fields filled my mind with memories of my hometown, Caracas.
